State Seal, License Plate and Passport Redesign

Design Brief

For this project, my goal was to redesign the Virginia state seal and license plate, as well as rethink the design of the US passport, which has remained unchanged for around 16 years now.

Research

For the first part of this project (redesigning official imagery for the state of Virginia) I did a lot of research on Virginia’s state history and symbols. The dogwood flower is Virginia’s state flower, so I decided to include that in the following designs. Similarly, the northern cardinal is it’s state bird, which I felt would be fitting for the re-designed seal.

The license plate was designed with a color palette extracted from Virginia’s landscape, and features a tagline associated with it’s tourism.

The seal and license plate design incorporated all the design elements I chose through my research. The state bird, flower, and the colors of Virginia’s landscape all come together to embody the official representation of Virginia as I see it.
